SARC's and Initial Support

Over the last fourteen years New Pathways has listened to the traumatic stories of many victims of sexual abuse. Our SARC Centres and Counselling Services have been carefully developed through the knowledge and experience we have gained over a long period of time. Our aim is to deliver a quality, relevant and effective service at all times to our community and service users.  We believe that our SARC's are making a significant contribution to our aim to provide an all embracing, sympathetic, caring and worthwhile service to victims of sexual crime.

Domestic rape, rape and other form of sexual violence or threatening behaviour is an extremely frightening and traumatic experience for victims.

Following sexual assault, many people feel distressed and may find it difficult to cope. They require some time to adjust to what has happened to them. People react to trauma differently.  It is important that victims understand their reactions and the feelings or symptoms they may be experiencing. The professional help and support offered by New Pathways staff will assist them in doing this. The support provided is given in a 3 stage programme:

Stage 1: Fast Track

A victim of sexual violence receives immediate support and crisis intervention. A Crisis Worker will explain procedures to the victim and also provide support during the Medical Examination and Police Interview.

Stage2: Holding and Pre-Court

In this stage the victim receives support either face to face or by telephone. The support provided is NOT counselling, it is merely support. A Support Worker / Independent Sexual Violence Advocate helps the victim to cope with flashbacks, nightmares and panic attacks and to deal  with everyday life. The case will not be discussed in any way.

Stage 3: Long term therapeutic intervention.

This would take place after any court case is held, only then will a Counsellor begin therapy with the victim. Dealing with feelings and moving through often terrifying feelings.

Police are working in partnership with New Pathways in delivering vital services to those affected by Sexual Violence, providing Forensic and Support services across the force area.

Over the last fourteen years New Pathways has listened to many victims tell their traumatic stories. We have recorded their needs and requests for help.We have put into action what we have heard and compiled all the relevant information. From this the SARC centres have been developed. Our aim is to deliver the best practice at all times to our community and service users. We believe our SARC's are achieving this.
